日本の百寿者（１００歳を超えた高齢者）は、２００５年に

この寿命の限界の要因に、細胞のＤＮＡ染色体の両端にある
テロメアが関係する。
身体のすべての細胞に存在する生物学的加齢マーカーで
老化に従い短くなる。
寿命は何年間と決まっているのではなく、テロメア分裂の
速度により決まる。
テロメアの短縮は、過剰栄養・活性酸素・毒物・感染に
速められ、反対に、適切な栄養・環境で長持ちする。
つまり、食養生が大事である。サプリメントは、食養生の

染色体の末端にある染色体を保護する構造物。
テロメアは細胞が分裂するたびに短くなっていく。
ヒトの線維芽細胞を培養すると、およそ50回の分裂で増殖が
止まってしまう。
テロメアが短くなりすぎて、染色体を保護できなくなり、
細胞が死ぬと考えられる。
無限に分裂を繰り返すがん細胞や、生殖細胞などでは
テロメラーゼ(telomerase)という酵素があり、
テロメアの短縮を防いでいる。
一般に受精卵から成熟細胞になるにつれて、
テロメラーゼの活性が低下していく。
