Max Joseph von Pettenkoferは、「実験衛生学の祖」と言われ
環境と病気の関係について研究した。
Louis Pasteurと Robert Kochは、「近代細菌学の開祖」と
称された。
Pasteurは１８６１年に、「自然発生説の検討」を著し、
従来の生命の自然発生説を否定した。
また、狂犬病の予防にも大きく貢献した。
Kochは細菌の培養法を改良、種々の病原菌を発見し、
結核菌の培養上清からツベルクリンを作製した。
