予防医学の歴史８（日本②）
開国に伴い、外国から侵入した伝染病が国内で大流行したため
政府は外来伝染病の予防を重視し、検疫の制度が定められた。
北里柴三郎は東京大学卒業後、衛生局に勤めていた。
緒方正規の勧めでベルリン大学に留学してKoch学び、
１８８９年に破傷風菌のみを取り出すことに成功した。
翌年には破傷風菌抗毒素を発見した。
１８９４年にはペストの蔓延していた香港でペスト菌を発見、
後に、属名はShigellaと名付けられた。
１９０１年にはドイツに留学し、Paul Ehrlichに師事した。
伝染病予防に資するため、１８９７年に伝染病予防法が制定
された。
現在は１９９８年の改正により感染症法として引き継がれて
いる。
