ペニシリンがAlexander Fleming(1881～1955）によって発見
されている。
２０世紀において医学を牽引したのは主にアメリカである。
公衆衛生の分野も同様にアメリカのCharles-Edward A. Winslow
による功績が大きい。
彼は細菌学者であり、公衆衛生学者であった。
細菌学、公衆衛生学、保健福祉行政について６００近い著書・
著作を残しており、現代の公衆衛生学の基礎を作ったとされる。
